URI Housing Application Instructions
First Semester Freshmen - Fall 2009
Eligibility For On-Campus Housing
To be eligible to live in URI on-campus residence halls, first semester incoming freshmen MUST pay an enrollment deposit and a housing deposit, as well as complete the two-part ON-LINE Housing and Dining Application by the deadline of May 1st. Students accepted after the deadline, are not guaranteed on-campus housing in any of the University's residences. The Department of Housing and Residential Life regrets that due to very high demand for on-campus housing, it will not be able to guarantee on-campus housing to students who are not first semester freshmen or who are transferring to URI from other institutions. This includes students who are transferring from CCRI or CCE in Providence. These students should review the information on other housing options at http://housing.uri.edu.
Enrollment and Housing Deposits
The enrollment deposit is $300 and the housing deposit is $200. The deposit amounts apply to both in-state and out-of-state students. Please check your records to ensure that you have paid the required deposits.
The Freshman Village
Incoming first semester freshmen who are eligible for on campus housing will live in one of the corridor based residence halls that comprise the University's Freshman Village. These are co-ed buildings in which female and male rooms are arranged along either side of a centrally located corridor or hallway. These buildings have been selected for freshmen because their design encourages the kind of social interaction that helps new students make a smooth transition to their new home at URI. The average ratio of staff members to residents in these buildings is 1 to 25. The majority of freshman residents will be assigned to a room with two other roommates. This room configuration is commonly referred to as a “triple' room.
Freshman Village Building Styles
There are two styles of buildings in the Freshman Village. Style #1 offers traditional, male and female specific, hallway bathrooms that are shared by the members of the hallway, and are maintained by the building's custodial staff. Style #2 offers semi-private bathrooms that are shared by the residents of each pair of adjacent rooms along a hallway. Each of the adjacent rooms has a private entrance to the bathroom from within the room and the residents who share the bathroom must clean it.
Living and Learning Communities
A Living and Learning Community (LLC) allows residents who are in similar academic environments to both live and study together by being assigned to the same residence hall. Five Living and Learning Communities for freshmen have been established for the 2009-2010 academic year. They are: the Undeclared Major LLC, the Human Sciences and Services majors LLC, the College of Environment and Life Sciences LLC, the Engineering Majors LLC and the Nursing LLC. Eligible residents will be assigned to a LLC on a space available basis and for this reason their assignment in their LLC is not guaranteed. Eligible residents who do not wish to be assigned to their LLC may indicate this preference on the ON-LINE Housing and Dining Application. For more information on triple rooms, building styles, housing prices, and Living and Learning Communities please visit http://housing.uri.edu.
Housing Application
On the Housing portion of the ON-LINE Housing and Dining Application, students can indicate their preference on a number of lifestyle criteria including building style. In addition, they can request specific roommates. Roommate requests, however, must be reciprocal to be processed. This means that if you request two other students on your application, they must request you on their applications. Building style and roommate requests will be honored on a space available basis and are not guaranteed. Students' housing applications will NOT be processed until their enrollment and housing deposits have been paid. The last day for students to request changes to the information they provide on their housing application is May 31st. Requests for changes or additions to this information will not be accepted after this date. In the event residents wish to change their assigned building, room or roommate, they may do so during the Fall Open Room Change Period, which begins during the third week of September and ends during the first week of December. Finally, all freshmen who live on campus must purchase a University dining plan. For assistance call 401-874-4151.
