The Rainbow Diversity House:
A community focused on social justice, social service and leadership.
About the Rainbow...
The rainbow was chosen as our symbol because it has been used to represent many organizations that strive for social justice and equality. Jesse Jackson used this symbol for his Rainbow Coalition to fight for civil rights and justice. Nelson Mandela used it in his country’s fight against an oppressive Apartheid regime. Greenpeace named two of its ships The Rainbow Warrior. The LGBT community also uses the rainbow as a symbol of unity and pride. In the D-House, the rainbow is a symbol of welcome and inclusion.
About the Program...
The Rainbow Diversity House community is engaged in the following:
- A diverse, multicultural international community focused on social justice and social service.
- Faculty involvement through a monthly guest speaker series and discussions on current events.
- Personal growth and community development through participation in house programs. This includes playing a role in developing house activities, shared meals, house council, etc.
- A community that values respect, compassion, and caring for others.
- A home environment for 40 residents, creating close friendships.
- Living in the same house as people who are involved in programs such as Jumpstart, Clearinghouse for Volunteers, Habitat for Humanity and URI 101 Mentors.
- Many activities and educational programs are planned around meals.
More about our house...
The Rainbow Diversity House is a diverse, multicultural living community. Student accommodations include 20 comfortable double rooms. The house has a large recreation room, which is often used for studying, programming, and other social activities. Lunch and dinner are prepared by the house chef on a daily basis Monday through Friday. Students enjoy their meals together in the common dining/living area.
